PROF. DATO DR. JAMIL HAMALI Rector UiTM, Sarawak


Professor Dr.Jamil Hamali holds a Diploma in Business Studies from MARA Institute of Technology, Shah Alam in 1984 and a Bachelor in Business Administration (majoring in Industrial Marketing) from Western Michigan, USA in 1986. He obtained his MBA with distinction from the United States International University, San Diego, USA in 1988. He was the Deputy Principal (Academic Affairs) of Universiti Teknologi MARA, Kuching (UiTM) before he left for the UK for his PhD. Dr.Jamil completed his PhD in Total Quality Management from the University of Salford, Manchester.

Currently, Dr.Jamil is the Rector/Campus Director of UiTM Sarawak. Before assuming this post, he was the Dean of the School of Business, UiTM Shah Alam, Malaysia (the largest business faculty in Malaysia). Prior to that, he was the Deputy Director (Student Affairs) of UiTM Sarawak. Besides holding administrative post, he is heavily involved in conducting various seminars and training specializing in the area of total quality management, marketing, strategic planning, motivation, team building, communication, entrepreneurship, leadership, change management, study skills, problem solving and decision making. Participants who attended his presentations, highly recommends him as a dynamic, entertaining and inspiring speaker. Among his clients are CELCOM, Bank Utama, Bintulu Development Authority, Dynamic Seminars, Kuching Waterboard, Customs & Excise, teacher’s training colleges, youth associations, schools and various government agencies and departments.

In 1995 and 2004 Dr. Jamil was awarded the Excellence Service Awards (Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang) for his achievements and contributions. He is an active member of Institute of Management Sarawak (MASA), Kesatuan Kaunseling Sarawak (KASARA) and Invention & Design Association of Sarawak (IDEAS). He is currently the President of IDEAS. In 2002, to recognize his contributions towards youth and community works in the state and exemplary performance as a government officer, Sarawak State Government awarded Dr.Jamil with the Pegawai Bintang Kenyalang Award (PBK). In 2011, he was awarded the Panglima Setia Bintang Sarawak (PSBS), one of Sarawak State’s highest award, which carries the title “Dato”. In 2016, Dr Jamil was awarded the State of Sarawak’s Maal Hijrah Award, the most prestigious award in recognizing individual contribution in religion and humanity. For his active involvement in quality management initiatives and productivity excellence, Dr Jamil was awarded the Malaysia Productivity Champion in 2017 by Malaysia Productivity Coorporation.

On campus, Professor Dr.Jamil Hamali is actively involved in various committees and association. He has also carried out research in varied subject areas, ranging from issues in SMIs to Higher Education. His research mainly focuses on the use of best methods and tools in managing organizational performance. Apart from research, Dr. Jamil also actively supervises postgraduate students, both at master and PhD levels. On the International front, Dr.Jamil maintains his collaborative works with the High Performance Organization (HPO) Research Group of University of Salford, Manchester, United Kingdom. Dr. Jamil is also actively involved in presenting papers and collaborative works around the globe. As of this date, he has collaborated and presented papers in Iran, Sweden, Australia, Estonia, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Bosnia, Brunei, Czech Republic, Nepal, New Zealand, Vietnam, South Korea, Myanmar, Singapore, India, Italy, Holland, United Kingdom and Turkey.

Dr. Jamil is also instrumental in establishing the first halal analysis laboratory on the island of Borneo located at UiTM Sarawak Campus. He is also known for initiating the first full time academic diploma course on Halal Management in UiTM. In recognition of these important initiatives taken by UiTM Sarawak on halal management, Jabatan Agama Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) Malaysia’s highest authority on Islamic matters (including halal development and certification) have granted UiTM Sarawak the right to conduct JAKIM’s Halal Executive Course (a 10 days certification course). It is mandatory for manufacturers involved in halal business in Malaysia to engage only executive that are certified to this course.
