Al-Khalid Othman is a Professor at the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). He is also a Fellow and Head of Energy Group at the Institute of Science Informatics and Technology Innovations (ISITI); and Head of Solar PV Group at the Center for Renewable Energy (CREN). He is also a corporate member of Institution of Engineers Malaysia (MIEM: 72907) and registered as Professional Engineer (P.Eng:17512) with Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) since 2016. In September 2018 he became Member of the Energy Institute (MEI), Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Energy Engineer (CEng. 69636) United Kingdom. Currently, he has been seconded for two years (1st May 2018 - 30th April 2020) at the Sarawak State Government as a Deputy Chief Scientist and Chief Advisor for Sarawak Digital Economy.
He graduated his first degree from Nottingham Trent University, U.K in 1995 with BEng. (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, followed by MSc. in Information Technology (Digital) from Nottingham University, U.K. in 1996. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering from Newcastle upon Tyne University, U.K. in 2007 with specialization in Underwater Acoustic Network Protocol.
His expertise, capability and trustworthiness are well-known in the field of communication network protocol and renewable energy through more than 20 years of his experienced in research, design and development; accomplished more than 40 research grants and consultancy with the total amount of more than RM50 million; supervised more than 15 postgraduate students for both PhDs and Masters by research; presented and published more than 150 ISI, SCOPUS Indexed journals and proceedings at the national and international level respectively. His is also an author and co-author of numerous published technical papers, books, book chapters and guidebooks. Moreover, he is also well versed in Institution of Higher Learnings (IHLs) academic matters, to includes, accreditation process, curriculum development, teaching and learning for both postgraduate and undergraduate programs.
In addition, he also managed more than 30 projects & programs in the establishment of Old Kuching Smart Heritage in line with the Kuching smart city development. He has also experience in design, development and implementation of engineering and ICT projects both in the United Kingdom and Malaysia. With his high achievement, he has been awarded for more than 20 national and international awards and recognitions.
